Every once in a while I dabble in bookmaking. I used to make my own journals all though college, just little ones that tucked just so in your pocket and weren’t too daunting to fill. I still have them all, they full of thoughts, memory verses, sketches, ideas, remnants of daily life. Most of them are stained in some area with coffee and I keep them together in a burlap sack. I still like making small journals, lately I have been trying to take my craft to a new level.
Before Christmas I posted about a trip to Hollanders here, I would love to take one of their many classes in bookbinding or printmaking. Last time I was there I bought new text blocks to make journals but hadn’t done anything with them. So it dawned on me to combine book-making with my passion for clay – Here are my first round of ceramic book covers I made just before Christmas. I was so excited to see how they turned out, if they warped in the kiln and their shrinkage rate.
A few months later I finally have completed my concept idea. They indeed shrunk quite a bit more that expected so I had to make my own signatures (papers inside) for them. I used leather for the back cover for durability, cutting, tooling and staining them. They are bound with a Coptic stitch binding, created with wax linen thread, sewn with a curved needle. Thanks mom for the new bookbinding book for my birthday, it has already come in handy. I love the variety in materials and the overall texture and rich feel. I am so thankful to have the ability and control to choose materials for every step of this process.
To complete these books I figured I used these FIVE artisan skills:
– ceramics (for the top cover)
– painting ( color selections/ glazing)
– paper crafting (to make the inside signatures)
– leather working (for the back cover)
– sewing (for the hand-bound edges)
I hope you all enjoy these as much as I do. I don’t know if these two will make it into the etsy shop, I think I am quite attached to them. I will definitely make more…

March 4th, 2011 at 3:54 am
You, my friend, are amazing. Love. Totally love them!
March 5th, 2011 at 2:44 am
It should be SIX artisan skills. You forgot photography, to share them on your blog. They look so neat!
March 11th, 2011 at 9:11 am
Haha- good point there, Diane! We all are having to learn photography for our wordpress posting. These pics are are so pretty they’re killing me!
KATE_ you just must make more and sell them on Etsy! I know I’d have to have one…never thought of using ceramic, myself. Though I’ve made books occasionally since 2nd grade, for craft. I can see how you became too attatched to sell…happens to me all the time. Great work and you SOOOo deserve being Freshly Pressed.

March 10th, 2011 at 2:32 pm

:)
March 10th, 2011 at 2:44 pm
LOVE IT! So glad I found your post! I love journaling, and this looks like a great gift idea. Thank so much!
March 10th, 2011 at 2:45 pm
You are a true artist and I am in awe of you! These book covers are so special and have so much meaning in my eyes–especially, because of the popularity of the Kindle and such. This brings the importance of why books are so special to attention. Of course, the words of a book are the true reason we love them. But it’s also the experience of holding, touching and feeling, and admiring the cover the book in your hands that adds to that experience. And your book covers would make that experience all the more meaningful. Lovely idea, and even lovelier covers! Reminds me of why I love Album covers so much and miss them–the artwork!
March 11th, 2011 at 9:13 am
I wonder if she can create a special Kindle cover this way, with a pocket in the back leather cover? Might be a BIG seller!!!
March 10th, 2011 at 2:53 pm
Beautiful. :)
March 10th, 2011 at 2:53 pm
Those are beautiful and even through the shrinkage, I think they are a wonderful size :)
March 10th, 2011 at 2:53 pm
Hmm…I wonder if that could be expanded to fit the mainstream? Or at least small-press. ^_^
March 10th, 2011 at 2:54 pm
Wow — love it!!! Absolutely gorgeous. Your work is incredible. Thank you so much for sharing and congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
Drive on,
– M.
March 10th, 2011 at 2:54 pm
That is SO cool. I want to make my own books now! I guess I just never thought of that skill.
March 10th, 2011 at 2:57 pm
You’re just awesome! I talk from the heart as well, and it’s never fancy.
First of all, I also share a love of journaling. My aunt “got me started” about 9 years ago when I was 11, and eight books later, I’m still journaling. Journals have always been a faithful friend, and a wonderful means for expressing myself.
Secondly.. I think it’s super neat that you not only “journal,” but that you create the books you write your deepest thoughts, fondest memories, loveliest verses and best concealed secrets in. That must be an amazing experience, and had I the drive and determination you did, I would try to master all of those creative areas so that I could create my own journal as well. The best I could do is find a journal whose shape and color I liked, buy it, and tape or glue a self-created and self-defining picture onto the front.
Appreciate your writing and your blog!

Beautiful! Congrats on freshly pressed.
Blessings,

These are way better than anything I’ll ever be able to do! Oh well, at least you make your own journals. Mine? They’re all from stationary shops. Well, maybe not all of them. Some of them are from different places. Some of them are even from different countries, bought as souvenirs by myself or gifts by friends. I love to write, so I have a pretty huge collection of these things.
March 10th, 2011 at 3:13 pm
Very cool! Nice work.
March 10th, 2011 at 3:14 pm
Wow, ceramic book covers. I guess next you’ll have to figure out how to make a protective cover for a Kindle out of clay.
March 10th, 2011 at 3:18 pm
WOW. I really hope you do continue to make these. These are incredibly beautiful. I can think of a number of friends who I would adore gifting with these. (Myself included!)
March 10th, 2011 at 3:42 pm
VERY COOL blog!!!!
March 10th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

March 10th, 2011 at 4:31 pm
Those are absolutely beautiful! I wish I was that talented…I keep trying to find another art outlet besides writing because I long to do something crafty with my hands.
March 10th, 2011 at 4:42 pm
gorgeous design, brilliant idea!
March 10th, 2011 at 4:43 pm
These are stunning works of art. I’d almost be afraid to write in them for fear of breaking them! I admire anyone who can create something so lovely with his/her own two hands. I can’t imagine the time these must have taken. Thank you for sharing!
March 10th, 2011 at 9:32 pm
Katie, they are quite durable, like a mug or plate. I did make the back cover out of leather and matched a stain color so they fit together. The leather allows you to place it on the table with less fear :)
handmade always brings great stories and love.
March 11th, 2011 at 4:56 am
They look amazing, and your quite right Kate there’s northing like hand made. Congratulation on the wonderful work keep it up
March 10th, 2011 at 4:50 pm
beautifully done! I especially like the one with the holes in the cover, & I love that you’re participating in such a rare artisan skill, almost forgotten in this age of Kindles, Wii, & cable programming. So now I’ve gotta add “bookbinding” to my list of things to try someday… thanks!
March 10th, 2011 at 4:51 pm
I totally tried this about 8 years ago and failed but that was due to my lack of experiance with clay. I’m pretty excited to see that it Could have worked if I had just had more experiance. Yay!
March 10th, 2011 at 5:10 pm
I Love strange and creative idea’s like this. Absolutely gorgeous, great thinking. I think you should get a patten for this idea and probably promote it. I know I would like to own one :)
totally unique <3

March 10th, 2011 at 5:13 pm
They look so perfect! So did you actually make the covers from scratch?
March 10th, 2011 at 9:39 pm
Yes, that was my favorite part! I made the front cover from stoneware clay that I carve a design into. You have to fire it twice in the kiln, once to keep the shape, the second to add the glaze/color. I have a bunch more ready go into the kiln, I just couldn’t wait to share what they looked like. All are slightly different and are one-of-a- kind.
March 10th, 2011 at 5:20 pm
Those are stunning!
March 10th, 2011 at 5:20 pm
pretty cool!
March 10th, 2011 at 5:24 pm

March 10th, 2011 at 5:35 pm
As a person who has been looking for the perfect journal since I was 11, yours comes really close! I love these!
March 12th, 2011 at 11:00 am
Thank you luku. What would your perfect journal be like? I love hearing peoples ideas.
March 10th, 2011 at 5:46 pm
Wow! What a fabulous idea! These are beautiful!
March 10th, 2011 at 5:53 pm
Awesome all the time to see how people who can write wonderful things the theme! Thank you! christian is a highly recommended brand!
March 10th, 2011 at 5:56 pm
Those are beautiful! what a brilliant idea. It makes me start thinking of other materials that would lend themselves to covers: linoleum floor tiles, for instance. You might also want to try clasps to close them. Maybe jewelry findings…or, when I was sewing all my clothes I remember that you could buy buckle closures to stitch onto kilts (these were short leather straps with a metal buckle and maybe three holes punched)…or Chinese frog closings made from silk… In fact, if you knit or crochet, you could also use any stiff backing and crochet or knit a covering for it…
Anyway, just wanted to say that I’m so impressed with your skill and creativity.
Anna
March 11th, 2011 at 2:38 am
Thanks for your kind comments and creative brainstorming :)
I do knit, those are good thoughts about the clasp, I’ll have to look into those.
I was thinking of sewing sleeves out of wool felt, I love the thicker industrial felt.
March 10th, 2011 at 5:56 pm
Its a great post. I read it fully and I must say very very interesting. Your post made me think about this again ;) … Very helpful post specially for me.
I think its a nice blog with great post, I would really like to keep reading here. Thanks for this useful article. I will recommend my friends to read your article.
March 10th, 2011 at 6:01 pm
Gorgeous!
March 10th, 2011 at 6:04 pm
You really make your presentation look easy, but I think this subject, I think this is I’ll never understand. It seems too complicated for me is very broad. I look forward to your next post, I will try to get to master it!
March 10th, 2011 at 6:14 pm
Oh my gosh, these are GORGEOUS! You so deserve to be on Freshly Pressed!
March 10th, 2011 at 6:20 pm
I love your artwork and I love your journals.
Peace be with you.
March 10th, 2011 at 6:24 pm
These are gorgeous! I would buy them if they are on sale :D
March 10th, 2011 at 6:27 pm
That is really cool. How heavy are these little books?
March 10th, 2011 at 9:40 pm
I don’t know the actual weight but they do not seem any heavier than a normal book. They have a great feel to them.
March 10th, 2011 at 6:32 pm
I’ve long had an interest in bookbinding. I even collected a few books on the subject, but I’ve never pursued it. I’ve also dabbled in ceramics and sewing. You inspire me!
March 10th, 2011 at 6:33 pm
Beautiful covers! I have handsewn several books through the years but went the traditional route for hardboard covers. You’ve inspired me to try something different (although I don’t have a kiln for clay).
March 10th, 2011 at 6:37 pm
They look gorgeous! I am interested as to how much wear and tear the clay will stand though, would be awesome for photo albums or special books though.
March 10th, 2011 at 6:56 pm
I stumbled upon this on the front page. I must say, it’s simply amazing! I can’t say I’ve ever seen anybody use clay as a book cover. :)
March 10th, 2011 at 7:13 pm
Wow these look great! are they heavy?
March 10th, 2011 at 7:33 pm
These are really unique. I love them. Have you ever thought about posting pages from your old journals as a blog? I have all of mine since 7th grade and thought it might make for an interesting post someday. Of course, I can’t boast to my covers being so beautiful. The most creative one I made involved decopage glueing of old movie posters and quotes from books I love. I liked it, but yours are even more lovely. Keep sharing!
March 10th, 2011 at 7:35 pm
Wow, these are amazing. Where can i buy them?
March 10th, 2011 at 7:37 pm
These are awesome! You should open a business!
March 10th, 2011 at 8:00 pm
Interesting, though I’m not too sure that it would survive a fall, especially if kids are involved
March 10th, 2011 at 8:13 pm
That is so cool! Very creative. What an awesome idea to make your your own journal. They’ll reflect you not only on the inside, but the outside as well.
March 10th, 2011 at 8:16 pm
beautiful! I would totally buy one of your journals! Great post – congratulations on being freshly pressed!
March 10th, 2011 at 8:44 pm
G O R G E O U S ! Do you sell them on Etsy?
March 10th, 2011 at 8:48 pm
Thank you… These are my concept jounals but yes I do have an etsy shop. I have a kiln load almost ready to go in, so perhaps I will have a batch in a few weeks.
I like the idea but never though I would get such a response! Thanks for your encouraging comments.
March 10th, 2011 at 9:08 pm
“Wonderful Job”!!! O the covers are so beautiful!!!
Have a wonderful evening :D :D
Love ya
March 10th, 2011 at 9:29 pm
My mother is a ceramic artist and I remember the calculations she would go through to account for shrinkage in some of her projects.
In this case, I think smaller is better, because of the weight.
March 10th, 2011 at 10:03 pm
This is fantastic! Very creative and unique.
March 10th, 2011 at 10:11 pm
You should call this “The Harder Cover” :) Nice work. :)
March 10th, 2011 at 10:12 pm
Truly lovely & artistic! Good job…I. agree you COULD sell them
March 10th, 2011 at 10:16 pm
Beautiful! Add me to the list of your future customers. Please contact me if you decide to sell these. (cvj237@verizon.net) What a wonderful gift one of these journals would make!
Thank you for sharing and God bless you!
March 10th, 2011 at 10:22 pm
Super great! I hope you don’t drop them!
March 10th, 2011 at 10:22 pm
Those are truly beautiful! Congrats on being freshly pressed today! You definitely deserve it. :-)
March 10th, 2011 at 11:02 pm
Clay? I never would have thought that a material from the Earth would be a good material for books… It’s nice to see someone combining the two things they love. It’s like a singer who also loves to dance – and they put on a spectacular show.
March 10th, 2011 at 10:14 pm
“Clay? I never would have thought that a material from the Earth would be a good material for books’.
What about paper?
March 11th, 2011 at 12:08 am
Looks awesome! But won’t they break if they fall?
March 11th, 2011 at 12:15 am
wow. i’d like to get my hands on them! i have a question though, are they heavy? for carrying Everywhere, i mean. :D
March 11th, 2011 at 12:22 am
I love the post!!! Thank you for sharing. =) I so agree that you make it available for orders.. =)

March 11th, 2011 at 1:28 am
Gorgeous. I was going to say you should sell these but I see that you said you might sell them on etsy. So original. They’d be great gifts.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:28 am
Do you mind if I copy and paste one of these pictures to my website? I think that your books are beautiful and I would buy one if they were in the stores. They definately compare to the journals that have been on the market.
March 11th, 2011 at 1:29 am
Gorgeous! They’d make awesome artsy wedding albums/guestbooks!
March 11th, 2011 at 1:57 am
Absolutely gorgeous!! Those covers have so much character. How long does it take you to complete one?
March 11th, 2011 at 2:12 am
It’s a process with all things made of clay, drying time, firing, glazing… They take about 2 weeks to make a batch, start to finish, but I have a large kiln so I do a number of covers at once. The leather, signitures, and binding are done per piece.
Thanks everyone for the comments and encouragement! So overwhelming!
They are not very heavy, I have made a few in a larger sizes and Becca I would love to make wedding guest books. How neat it would be to be a part of someones special day. The leather covers on back make them easy to engrave/personalize. I will post when I put them in my etsy shop.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:15 am
These are Beautiful… They’d go great with a custom made pen by Caden http://pensbycaden.webs.com/
(a high school kid I bought a beautiful Custom pen from last October…) I love the artisan factor, I love that my journal could be enclosed in a work of art… COOL!
March 11th, 2011 at 2:17 am

Wow these are amazing! I love the earthy feel of them, and the one with the blue reminds me of a topographical map.
March 11th, 2011 at 2:42 am
Amazing! I just started working leather again after *muffle* years while I was saving up to get my kiln fixed. Unemployment would be compleatly unbearable if I wasn’t able to create something! Right now I’m writing a book on chess and helping independent filmmakers. I occasionally make journals as gifts and never thought to use clay, but it looks like a great idea for a special-occasion journal! Thanks for the post!
March 11th, 2011 at 3:00 am
Hi Kate,
Loved your idea of using a ceramic cover for the journals. Beautiful work, indeed.
March 11th, 2011 at 3:17 am
I haven’t worked in natural clay since 4th grade. I’ve never had a kiln. I’d love too though.
You do wonderful work. I know it’s relaxing and fulfilling to make such beauty with your own two hands.
That book is a dandy. Thanks for sharing your creation and thoughts along the way with us.

These are very cool but I would personally make one with a spine myself, to keep the paper from tanning (or gathering tea spills), and I’d add characters from the book to the cover too.
Still, they look good enough to eat! Thank you for sharing. :)

Thanks bB, my etsy shop is http://www.etsy.com/shop/katehust?ref=pr_shop_more. I do not have these journals in my shop yet, but I just unloaded a kiln this morning. Hopefully I can whip up a few to post before Friday. So excited about how these came out.
